At Motif we handcraft geometric tiles that fit together to create beautiful patterns in a range of glazes. We believe that attention to detail creates beauty.
The patterns we offer can transform a space and create a beautiful effect. Our tiles are hand made, we do not have any aversion to machinery, its just that to make the tiles in the forms needed – stars, crosses, border tiles and so on: all made to fit your installation – for us the traditional ways remain the most suitable.
We start by rolling out clay and pressing it into molds. After drying for two to four days we trim the edges and fire them to create 'bisque' tiles. Once cooled, we coat them with one of our twenty glazes. These tiles are dried again and fired a second time to a higher temperature so that they become glazed. The tiles are carefully cooled back to room temperature. If we've fired our translucent 'raku' glazes we can hear these tinkling as they cool - giving them their intentional, intriguing crackle. It's a lovely sound.
The tiles are then ready to be installed. We remember installing our first wall and we like to be available to give any advice you might need.
On our website you can view all of the patterns and drop the glaze colours into the pattern. In this way we hope that you can play with the colours and shapes and arrive at a form that you find pleasing.
